THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARIAN IN A MODERN INFORMATION SERVICE
Abstract
Concern for the future of Libraries as primarily departments for the organization and management of information and knowledge, which arose and took on great proportions a few years ago, brought back to the forefront the Knowledge Management, as a possible tool to ensure their viability. Libraries were suddenly confronted with a series of new social phenomena, to which they had to respond immediately. Awareness of these new needs of users has led to the investigation and recording of the qualifications that a modern librarian should or would like to have. The interest and difficulty of creating a set of qualifications that will effectively describe the roles of a librarian in a modern library, is an interesting and difficult process that concerns the ability to adapt his existing qualifications to the challenges of new emerging qualifications and the ability to remain adaptable in an ever-changing environment.Respect and recognition of the traditional information environment and at the same time adoption of new ideas in order to meet the increased needs of users by ensuring their access to information are also very important.
